SCBWI SA Sketch and Scribble

SCBWI SA were excited to host their first virtual Sketch and Scribble event and were delighted to be joined by members from both interstate and overseas. The workshop, presented over three sessions, explored the Japanese crafts of Haiku and Haiga. Author Alys Jackson and illustrator Julia Wakefield, introduced participants to these forms of verse/art inspired by the natural world—and what better setting than the backdrop of the beautiful South Australian coastline.

The first session looked at Haiku, a Japanese verse traditionally written in seventeen syllables. Participants were introduced to the craft of Haiku through both traditional and modern examples. Those with some knowledge of Haiku (from back in their school days), learned that it was not necessary to adhere to the five, seven, five syllable count.

The second session provided an introduction to Haiga, a Japanese painting style that traditionally accompanies a Haiku. It was wonderful to see some examples of Haiga and how the illustrations can complement and add an important element to a haiku.

Following these two pre-recorded sessions, participants were invited to attempt their own Haiku and Haiga.

The final workshop was hosted live via Zoom. This provided a wonderful opportunity to connect and discuss each other’s creations. For many, this was their first attempt at Haiku and Haiga and the results were amazing.

Thank you to Alys and Julia for hosting this inspiring workshop.
