Dear SCBWI members,
You may have heard that the Catholic Schools Diocese of Newcastle-Maitland has decided to discontinue the role of Teacher Librarian from 2027. Sadly, this is not an isolated case. Teacher librarians are disappearing from schools all across Australia.
Many of us have had the privilege of visiting school libraries, helping to foster a love of reading. Multiple studies have shown how important a library is for the health, well-being and happiness of a school.
In a world of increasing misinformation, disinformation and the proliferation of AI, kids need the guidance of the librarian, who plays a vital role in supporting the curriculum, from information and research skills to navigating AI and fostering reading for pleasure, which strengthens kids’ resilience and success in all other learning areas.
With increasing levels of anxiety among kids, the library is also a refuge for those who need a quiet space, or time out, or want to disappear into the safety of a book. The librarian is the guardian of that space, wise, kind, funny and always with their eye on those kids who need a little help, protection or a kind guiding hand.
If you feel strongly about this issue, please sign this petition asking all education departments to mandate teacher librarians in Australian schools.
