We look forward to catching up with you for our third gathering of the year on August 20.

This gathering will feature Susannah McFarlane, Cally Black and Nicky Johnston.

Susannah McFarlane is the author of some of Australia’s most successful children’s book series. She is the creator and writer of the awarding-winning EJ12 Girl Hero and EJ Spy School series; the creator and co-author of the hugely popular series for boys, Boy vs Beast; the author of the Little Mates series of the alliterative alphabet picture books for under-fives, and the series editor for Stuff Happens!, a great series for tween boys about the everyday challenges they face. Susannah was also the original concept creator of two of Australia’s leading tween fiction series—Go Girl! and Zac Power.

Susannah was previously the co-owner, managing director and publisher of Hardie Grant Egmont; the managing director of Egmont Books UK; the vice-president of the Egmont Group; contributor to the UK trade journal Publishing News; and the Convenor of the Children’s Publishing Committee and Board Director of the Australian Publishers’ Association. 

Susannah has titled her talk – ‘Oi! I’m over here!’ How to claim your space in a crowded children’s book market.

Cally Black, SCBWI member and author of educational fiction and Sci Fi short stories, has been on a long writing quest for that elusive thing that might make her work stand out in a marketplace full of amazing books.

As the winner of the Ampersand Prize, Cally will share her journey to her first trade novel and what she’s learned about voice, storytelling and finding personal strengths in her talk – Pushing For Something More. 

Nicky Johnston is an educator, speaker and author/illustrator. She is passionate about promoting resilience in children and raising awareness of mental health issues. Her book ‘Go Away, Mr Worrythoughts!’ has been produced as a theatrical production which has been touring primary schools for the past 5 years.

Nicky’s love of teaching sees her busy with school visits and presenting at workshops and conferences. Her extensive experience as an educator has provided her with valuable skills that she now utilises when visiting schools as an author/illustrator. During her talk, Picture This, Nicky will share practical hints, tips and examples to help you when presenting in schools.

As usual, we will have a brief Show and Tell segment, so if you have a recent publication to show us or news of a recent success to share (such as an award or grant) we’d love to hear from you.

Place: RMIT University, Building 13, 379-405 Russell Street, Melbourne (corner Victoria Street). PLEASE NOTE ROOM CHANGE: The room is in the same building as our last event, but one level higher. Enter via the main Russell Street entrance and follow the SCBWI signs up the stairs to room 13.3.009 (Building 13, floor 3, room 9).
Time: 2pm—5pm (all are welcome to stay on afterwards to chat and drink downstairs)

SCBWI June gathering

Our next meeting is on 18 June.

 Our special guest speaker will be Marisa Pintado, Commissioning Editor of Children’s and YA fiction at Hardie Grant Egmont. And we're delighted that our member speakers for June will be Bernadette Kelly and George Ivanoff. 

Marisa Pintado: From Whoa to Go: The Acquisition Process

Marisa is Commissioning Editor of Children's and YA Fiction at Hardie Grant Egmont. Marisa was the founder of the Ampersand Prize for debut novelists and she's worked with a variety of emerging, commercially successful and award-winning writers. She recently spent a year in London with Egmont UK’s fiction team. 

Bernadette Kelly: Writing and Me – It's a Long Story

Bernadette has been a children's author for sixteen years and a member of SCBWI for eight years. Her published books cover a range of age groups and genres. Bernadette is a fellow of the May Gibbs Children's Literature Trust and a former council member and Marketing Coordinator for YABBA—Young Australians Best Book Awards. 

George Ivanoff: Engaging Kids as Readers

George is an author and stay-at-home dad. He has written over 90 books for kids and teens, including the RFDS Adventures, the You Choose series and the Gamers trilogy. As a kid, George loved reading interactive books, where he got to make decisions about the direction of the story. He has had more fun plotting and writing the You Choose books than pretty much anything else. Writing the RFDS Adventures has opened his eyes to the amazing work done by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. He's thrilled that You Choose: The Treasure of Dead Man's Cove won the 2015 YABBA for Fiction for Younger Readers. George will talk about Engaging Kids as Readers. http://georgeivanoff.com.au

SCBWI Victoria: Scratch and Scribble at the Zoo

Melbourne Zoo: Elliot Ave - Parkville, Victoria

As children’s book authors and illustrators we often find ourselves creating animal characters, and we need to keep our skills nimble. SCBWI Victoria is here to help.
 
We invite you to join us on Sunday October 18 for a SCBWI day at the Melbourne Zoo. This will be a relaxed, social event filled with drawing and writing. There will be an assortment of species on show (human and otherwise).
 
We will meet inside the zoo at 11am, opposite the main entrance. We will give you some creative challenges on the day that you can follow or ignore. It is a time for skills development and fun; you can work alone, in pairs or get together with a small group to explore, draw and/or write.

Zoo Entrance Fee: $31.60 (Full) $24.20 (Concession)

Getting there:
The zoo is located at Elliott Avenue, Parkville
The 55 Tram runs from William Street in the city centre, stopping directly outside Melbourne Zoo.
Trains run from Flinders Street Station on the Upfield line, stopping at Melbourne Zoo’s own Royal Park Station.
The 505 Bus route from Moonee Ponds to Melbourne University stops outside Melbourne Zoo.
There is limited car parking on Elliott Avenue, Parkville. Melways ref 43 E1. Car parking costs $2 for five hours and is monitored by City of Melbourne parking inspectors regularly.
