On Sunday 10th April we had our first official event for the year, A Day in the Park; a chance to catch up with fellow SCBWI members and write or draw in the beautiful grounds of Carrick Hill in the Adelaide foothills.
We had postponed events due to SA’s Covid outbreak, but as luck would have it this event fell in the week of the state’s peak in Covid cases. However, the weather was perfect and we had a good turn-out despite the number of members unwell or in Iso.
We met in the café for coffee, with new members welcomed and a chance to chat with friends. We were excited to have Caz Goodwin attend, Victoria’s Assistant Regional Advisor, who is in Adelaide for a May Gibbs’ fellowship. We stayed in the café chatting for longer than anticipated as it was so nice to finally catch up with other creatives!
We then ventured into the sunshine to the Children’s Story Book Trail. We saw Ratty’s boat, a Hobbit hole, the troll’s bridge, the gates to the Secret Garden, Wilbur and Charlotte’s Web, Aslan and the lamp post and a village of cubby houses. There was so much inspiration to draw and write, but the heat sent us back up the hill to the formal gardens with shade and green grass. There, we sat down, pulled out our notebooks and… kept chatting.
It was an absolutely wonderful afternoon, but I don’t think anyone managed to write or draw anything!
We look forward to seeing everyone online at our Winter Gathering on 23rd July.
