SCBWI SA held their annual Sketch and Scribble in the magnificent Adelaide Botanic Gardens. Led by a writer and illustrator team, Sketch and Scribble provides an opportunity for attendees to create and develop ideas, seeking inspiration from our beautiful natural settings.
We began with a tour of the kitchen gardens with illustrator (and Botanic Garden educator) Lauren Mullinder. Full of vibrant colours, fragrances and flavours, the gardens were the perfect place to stimulate our creativity.
Lauren, together with poet Kristin Martin, led our first activity. Following verbal prompts, we each illustrated a unique insect, described our insect’s personality and used the first letter of these traits to give our insect a name. There were some wacky, wonderful (and even intoxicated) insects, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few appear in future publications (Mandy!)
We explored the Bicentennial Conservatory where we took some time to soak up the atmosphere and scrawl a few lines or sketches beneath the giant palms. From there we strolled through the Australian Forest to the Waterlily Pavilion and Lauren was on hand to answer all our botanical questions.
From ancient trees to enchanting air plants, the gardens provided a wealth of inspiration for both authors and illustrators. Thank you to Lauren Mullinder and Kristin Martin for leading our activities for the day.
