“In a world of wild weather, is anywhere safe?” This tagline on the cover of Final Storm, the finale of

Deborah Abela’s action-packed ‘cranky climate change’ trilogy feels increasingly relevant with each passing year. The series takes climate change as a starting point and adds a twist of sci-fi to create a familiar but futuristic world in which experts are ignored and a group of kids are forced to risk their lives to find the truth. The futuristic element allows the story to be thought-provoking and topical without being immediately anxiety-inducing for young readers. Action on climate change is something many kids are passionate about, and Abela’s young characters – something of a tribute to this new generation of activists – and their stories are a good starting point for exploring the issues.

Note: The series includes Grimsdon, New City and Final Storm
