On Saturday we held a SCBWI gathering upstairs at the Hutt Street Library in Adelaide for SCBWI Adelaide members and non-members.
I began by welcoming everyone and gave a brief run-down on SCBWI ANZ and how things work in Victoria. I explained that SCBWI is the largest group of authors/illustrators in the world and has a world-wide membership of 24,000 with chapters in many countries as well as in most states of the United States. Being part of such a large organisation has many advantages and is a wonderful creative support.
I asked Sally Chance, May Gibbs Children’s Literature Trust National Programme Coordinator to speak to the group for a few minutes about May Gibbs Creative Time Fellowships before introducing our first Member Author Speaker, Katrina Germein who delighted us with stories of some of her publishing experiences, new and old.
Member Author Speaker, Vikki Wakefield followed with a talk about the covers of her books and how they have come to be. Everyone enjoyed the natural honesty of both these member speakers.
An afternoon tea break followed before I introduced our Guest Speaker, Publisher and General Manager at Omnibus Books, Dyan Blacklock who gave a Show and Tell of many proven treasures and new releases which have been published by Omnibus, as well as sharing some publishing advice for established and pre-published members of the audience.
As I left to rush to the airport and a plane back to Melbourne, I saw happy faces and lots of sharing of information, so I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did.
