SketchLook! February 2016

SketchLooksmall.jpg

SketchLook is an ongoing feature of the SCBWI Blog. It is a glimpse into the working process of artists, how we experiment, think through our ideas, stretch our imagination and observe the world. This is a glimpse at current work in progress, free doodles, rough drawings, and sketches from life. CLICK HERE to participate in SketchLook.

Take a peek at the working drawings and sketchbooks of some of our members:

Sue Rawlinson—These are preliminary drawings either for portraits or a story I wrote.

Tania McCartney—Because my work is a blending of hand-rendered sketches (finished in watercolour, gouache and ink) as well as mono-printing, textures, photographs, patterning, filters and digital art, my sketchbook is quite non-traditional.

I rarely do preliminary sketches, and instead perfect one single pencil sketch on watercolour paper, then outline it in ink. From there, I paint it then scan the images and adjust them in Photoshop before assembling them in Adobe Illustrator (using scanned mono-printed backgrounds, filters and digital art).

Here is a work-in-progress, beginning with a traditional sketch, through digital manipulation and page construction.

Belinda Morris—Sketches in ink and pencil.

Isabella Andronos—Tonal studies, colour studies, sketches of landscapes.

A call-out for the next selection will be sent out in good time but members of SCBWI Australia East & New Zealand are invited to submit images at any time. Work should be scans or snapshots of sketchbook pages featuring sketches, drawings from life or working drawings. Up to five images, Jpeg format, 72 dpi, 750px width maximum. Kindly avoid overlaying text on images and other digital manipulation. CLICK HERE to submit images for SketchLook.

Join us for a meet and greet to catch up with fellow SCBWI members and as a treat, you can stay afterwards for a special showing of Pioneers in Petticoats, a play about four charismatic colonial Australian women, written by our very own, Wendy Blaxland.

Pioneers in Petticoats brings to life four charismatic colonial Australian women. In 1791 First Fleet convict Mary Bryant escaped the colony in an open boat to Batavia (now Timor), with tragic results. Child pioneer Eliza Hawkins travelled on a bullock dray to Bathurst. Unsung scientist Fanny Macleay emigrated as the eldest of six unmarried daughters of the Colonial Secretary. And the legendary celebrity Lola Montez performed her Spider Dance at the Ballarat goldfields in the 1850s.

Returning in 2016 for a second season, this original play is written by award-winning playwright Wendy Blaxland and stars Australian stage and screen actress Brigid O’Sullivan. Pioneers in Petticoats lets you meet some of the inspiring women who helped shape today’s Australia.
