Webinars—SCBWI Australian Picture Book Illustrator Awards


These webinars are free for all Australia East & New Zealand and Australia West members. New Zealand members are not eligible to apply for the Award because of the restrictions surrounding the funding, however New Zealand members and any other members who are not eligible for the award might benefit from the webinar on How to Prepare your Portfolio. Members of our partner organisation the Australian Society of Authors are also welcome to attend.

Take the first step to building an illustration portfolio that represents you and your work. In this session, discover your WHY – why you do what you do, learn HOW to make an effective portfolio and then plan WHAT you need to do to reach your goal of applying for the Australian Picture Book Award?

Learn how to present your portfolio or passion project. In this session, Liz talks about what it takes to prepare an award-winning pitch. Nina shares simple steps to craft your pitch (portfolio or project), sharing tips on how to clearly communicate your value and why your audience should listen. Marjorie offers ideas on how to present the best version of your portfolio and how to best present your work for the Australian Picture Book Illustrator Award.

Nina Rycroft

Nina Rycroft has been illustrating picture books since her first picture book was awarded the CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia) Notable Book in 2000. Since then, she's had more than a dozen picture books published worldwide, including award-winning picture book and stage production ‘Boom Bah!’ (Phil Cummings), 'No More Kisses' (Margaret Wild), ‘Good Dog Hank’ (Jackie French) and ‘Pooka’ (Carol Chattaway, YABBA Award Winner, 2013).

Liz Anelli

Liz is an English born illustrator with over 20 published titles and a handful of awards. She illustrates picture books and junior fiction and now – after a gap of too many years – is writing them too. She draws all the time and it makes her very happy. Liz also loves exploring on her bicycle and creates huge illustrated maps for her hometown of Newcastle’s Tourism Industry. Liz’s recent publications are Maddie’s First Day, Ten Pound Pom, One Photo, Grace and Katie, Desert Lake, Howzat! With Dry to Dry, and The Biscuit Maker, up-coming this spring. Marjorie Crosby-Fairall

Marjorie has illustrated over twenty children’s books and has been published internationally. Her books appear on the Premier’s Reading Challenge lists and have been shortlisted and won awards, including the CBCA Eve Pownall Award. Her 2020 picture book releases are Say Cheese with Frances Watts (February), Huberta’s Big Surprise with Klay & Mark Lamprell (August), and Bear in Space, a collaboration with Deborah Abela (August).
