Deborah Abela shortlisted for WA Young Readers' Book Award

February 25, 2017

Congrats to Deb Abela on being shortlisted for a coveted

WA Young Readers' Book Award 2017

for her junior novel

Teresa:  A New Australian

Published by Scholastic

in paperback, for ages 8 - 12

Teresa:  A New Australian is about a young girl and her family who migrate to Australia after the devastation of WW2.
The novel was inspired by Deb's own family's story of survival during the heaviest bombing raids of WW2, and their migration to a country in the grip of the White Australia Policy.

Yet another honour for our hardworking Assistant Regional Advisor - congrats again Deb!

Jill Carter-Hansen wins Live Poets at Don Bank award

January 8, 2017

Congrats to writer/illustrator Jill Carter-Hansen on winning the

2016 Short Fiction Award, Live Poets at Don Banks

for her story

Revelation.

An iconic 1820s cottage, the historic Don Banks Museum is the setting for the monthly Sydney institution The Live Poets at Don Bank, organised by long standing poet Danny Gardner. Jill's award was for a one to two page original story which had to be read out by the writer to the other writers in the audience, who then voted on the night. There were numerous entries.

'Revelation' was inspired by a personal supernatural incident from her past.

Sounds intriguing - congrats again talented Jill!
